Purpose - A BMS monitors and protects the lithium battery from operating outside its safe operating area. This includes over/under voltage, over current, and extreme temperatures.
Cell Balancing - The BMS balances the charge of individual cells in a battery pack to prevent weaker cells from becoming over/under charged. This extends battery life and safety.
Charge/Discharge Control - The BMS controls the charging and discharging of the battery to keep currents and voltages within safe limits. It can cut off the battery if thresholds are exceeded.
Safety Protection - The BMS has safeguards to prevent issues like short circuits, overheating, and overcharging/discharging. It may disconnect the battery if dangerous conditions are detected.
Communication - Advanced BMS systems communicate battery information like voltage, current, temperature, etc. to other systems via interfaces like CAN bus.
